Abstract

The Purpose of this study was to find out effect of substance abuse prevention program on the knowledge and attitude toward substance of middle school student. Research method used in this study was an equivalent control group pre-test and post-test design in quasi-experimental research. The total subjects of this study were 376 middle school students residing at 2 schools in Gwangju (181 experimental group, 195 control group). The experimental group received the substance abuse prevention program, but the control group did not receive treatment The data were collected from March 10, 2002 to June 10, 2002, and analysed by x2-test, t-test, paired-t test, Using the SPSS/WlN 10,0 Program, The results were as follows. 1. The experimental group received the substance abuse prevention program showed a significantly higher knowledge toward substance score than the control group (t=2.601 £¬ p=0.005). 2. The experimental group received the substance abuse prevention program showed a significantly lower attitude toward substance score than the control group (t=-3.300, p=0.000). Thus this study concluded that this substance abuse prevention program will be a more effective prevention of problem behavior for Adolescents. The following suggestions might be offered on the basis of the result. 1. It is recommended that study for lasting effectiveness of program on the know ledge and attitude toward substance of middle school student should be repeated. 2. It is recommended that the substance abuse prevention program should be eveloped with adolescent¡¯s substance problem level. 3. It is recommended that network of adolescent¡¯ s substance abuse prevention in school and committee should be developed as unitary method for multidisciplinary approach.
